(MONTPELIER) After two years of planning, Hunger Mountain Cooperative is finalizing its expansion and renovation plans. Construction should begin in April and be completed by November 2008.
Coop members overwhelmingly approved an expansion plan in December 2006, to improve The Coop's working and shopping environments. Cost increases due to inflation and permitting have led The Coop to modify the design and budget. In January the Coop board of directors voted to increase the project budget by 10% to $2.86 million. "We have worked to balance The Coop's needs and our Member's priorities while keeping the project affordable. The Council and our design team are pleased with the results and excited to move forward," said Council President Stephen Klein.
Construction drawings have been submitted and contractor bids are due February 22nd. The Coop is working with its general contractor and design professionals to select subcontractors and establish the final project scope and budget. "Given our strong financial position, steady sales growth and favorable building and borrowing climates, we feel this is an ideal time to complete this project," said General Manager Kari Bradley. "Construction will begin as soon as the ground is thawed and construction should be complete by the Thanksgiving holiday. It will be an exciting year."
The Coop is adding approximately 7000 square feet to the receiving and retail areas. Additional office space is also included in the plan. There will be major improvements to employee workspaces, and the efficiency challenges in the current building will be addressed. Space will be provided for additional products, new checkout lanes to reduce lines, and to makes it easier to maneuver through the aisles. The Coop is also planning several environmental improvements, including more natural lighting, more wall and ceiling insulation and a lighting renovation.
In 2007, the Coop worked on design details, secured zoning and building permits and lined up project financing. The project will be financed through a combination of cash holdings, bank loans and loans from Coop members.
The Coop is working with HP Cummings of Woodsville, NH as its general contractor. William MacLay Architects and Planners of Waitsfield, VT is the project architect.
