The numbers are in! Hunger Mountain Coop was successful in bagging groceries for over 300 area families and senior citizens! In addition to these bagged groceries, The Coop provided cases of specific grocery items to area food shelves in Montpelier, Northfield, Middlesex, Waterbury, and to organizations such as Central Vermont Community Action and Central Vermont Council on Aging. Based on requests from these groups, the grocery items were specifically suited to the needs of the people that each of these facilities serves. In all, these efforts resulted in The Coop reaching out to over 800 households this year!
Hunger Mountain Coop's Holiday Grocery drive focuses on making healthy groceries available to needy families during the holidays. Filling and delivering grocery bags at this time of year ensures that families in need will still be able to serve healthy foods to their families, even if their funds are low for other seasonal reasons.
At a time when many families are feeling pressed by the demands of the holidays and increased fuel costs, we want to do what we can to help keep healthy foods on their tables, stated Community Relations Manager, Linda Hagens
Each bag of groceries was valued at over $75, and filled with basic items such as pasta, soup, peanut butter & jelly, and fresh fruit. The groceries were picked up and delivered by local non-profit groups such as Neighbors Helping Neighbors, The Family Center, and The Montpelier Food Pantry. The Barre City Police Department takes on the huge job of delivering groceries door to door through the Toys for Tots program.
This donation would not be possible without the support of the volunteers who help bag groceries and those who pick up and deliver for the food shelves. We are also grateful to donations from our shoppers and to our vendors who donated or discounted product to help fill these bags. This is The Coop's sixth year bagging groceries for needy families during the holidays.
